Board Certified General and Forensic Psychiatrist

Eugene Simopoulos Forensic Psychiatry Virginia
Dr. Simopoulos is an experienced, highly trained Board Certified General and Forensic Psychiatrist in Virginia. Born and raised in Falls Church, Virginia, Dr. Simopoulos graduated with Highest Distinction from the University of Virginia with a degree in Religious Studies, focusing on biomedical ethics, and completed medical school at the George Washington University.  He completed two years of surgical sub-specialization in Urologic Surgery at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill before he transitioned to Psychiatry. He returned for residency at George Washington and was selected by faculty to serve as a Chief Resident.  Dr. Simopoulos brings a unique combination of clinical skills for the benefit of his patients, with emphasis on the synergistic role between pharmacotherapy and diverse schools of psychotherapy.

Dr. Simopoulos approaches each patient he is privileged to see with compassion, empathy, and professionalism. Throughout residency and fellowship, he cultivated his interest in psychiatric problems found in the medically hospitalized population, spiritual and existential crises across the lifespan, and the growing mental health needs of incarcerated individuals. He has worked with distinguished faculty and colleagues in both the psychiatric and psychological professions and published and presented across the State of Virginia, the District of Columbia and internationally.

With completion of Forensic Psychiatry fellowship at the University of Virginia, the Institute of Law, Psychiatry, and Public Policy (ILPPP), and Western State Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Simopoulos also brings considerable training to both criminal and civil forensic assessments. He is a visiting Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Virginia and is the Forensic Medical Director and an acute forensic unit psychiatrist at Western State Hospital. He is also Director of Mental Health Services at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.  He is available for forensic consults, formal evaluations, and invited speaking engagements.

Dr. Simopoulos looks forward to collaborating with you on your treatment needs.
